GIVEAWAY! envirosax designer bags

Single-use bags, both paper and plastic, represent a huge threat to the environment. This threat is not only related to the sheer volume of them ending up in landfill, but also to the resources needed to produce, transport and (occasionally) recycle them, and the emissions resulting from these processes. Single-use plastic bags are also well known for their interference in ecosystems and the part they play in flood events, where they clog pipes and drains.

Plastic bag facts

*Approx. 380 billion plastic bags are used in the United States every year. That’s more than 1,200 bags per US resident, per year.

*Approx. 100 billion of the 380 billion are plastic shopping bags.

*An estimated 12 million barrels of oil is required to make that many plastic bags.

*Only 1 to 2% of plastic bags in the USA end up getting recycled.

*Thousands of marine animals and more than 1 million birds die each year as a result of plastic pollution.

*The United Nations Environment Programme estimates that there are 46,000 pieces of plastic litter floating in every square mile of ocean.

*Plastic bags are often mistakenly ingested by animals, clogging their intestines which results in death by starvation. Other animals or birds become entangled in plastic bags and drown or can’t fly as a result.

*Even when they photo-degrade in landfill, the plastic from single-use bags never goes away, and toxic particles can enter the food chain when they are ingested by unsuspecting animals.

*Approximately 14 million trees are cut down every year for paper bag production.

*Most of the pulp used for paper shopping bags is virgin pulp, as it is considered stronger.

We do recycle at home, bring our own shopping totes, have a small organic garden.

  3. I'm a follower. We try to use reusable totes as much as possible. We used to wash our daughters clothes every week, but realized how much water we were wasting since her clothes don't even take up a whole load. Now her laundry is done every two weeks when her hamper is completely full!

  4. ugh. I just typed a long note to you hear. But it deleted. dumb.

Thanks for the heads up on this giveaway. I am a reusable grocery bag user and love them. I could use some new cute ones to make my older ones look a little more spiffy.

not sure about email....could you resend? I am usually really prompt on responding so maybe I didn't get it...were you sending me a link to put on my blog? I can't remember. I swear this pregnancy with this heat is doing me in.

I am so behind on my blog reading.

Have a great Thursday...I am all about the Patience today.

  5. I follow. :) These are cute bags. I've switched from using plastic bottled water to filling reusable water bottles with a Brita filtration system. We have a lot less garbage since we made the switch.

  6. I'm following! We use reusable bags, recycle and try to buy local and organic food. We still have WAY too much plastic in our life! I'm working on that!

  7. I just shared your giveaway in my post,Listen to the Turtle, over on Everyday Mommy. I hope you get a lot of people stopping by!

  8. I would love to win these. I am a follower.

We compost, recycle, use reusable shopping bags, clean with non-toxic cleaners...we try.

  9. I have used reusable bags in an effort to be more green. I've also started a compost pile, and I recycle everything possible.
